Whether you’re building a new wardrobe or adding to what you already have, we all want to look amazing while keeping to a budget.
Here are 5 ideas for how to look amazing on a budget:
1. Start shopping secondhand.
Whether it’s thrift stores, consignment boutiques or by swapping with a friend, you can get so much more when you’re not paying retail. Plus you can find unique pieces and vintage items to add personality to your wardrobe.
2. Shop with a list.
Just like at the grocery store, when you go in without a list, your eyes are bigger than…well, your closet.
Keep track of the pieces you need (basics tees and camisoles that have worn out, a denim blouse you’ve been admiring, a bathing suit cover up for your upcoming cruise) and stick to the list.
When you enter a new season (or get a new job), prioritize your must-haves. You may not find the perfect gray blazer right away so have patience as you build your wardrobe. BUT…
3. Be open to finding timeless pieces you can wear forever.
Classic blazers, white blouses, dress pants, white jeans, sheath dresses…these pieces will never go out of style, so when you see one in your size and color for a good deal, snag it.
4. Create a mix and match wardrobe.
One of the best ways to do this is by limiting your wardrobe to your best neutral colors and two or three “pop” colors.
You want to have basics (like jackets, pants and skirts ) in neutral colors but when it comes to tops, cardigans, colored jeans and accessories, limiting yourself to a few main colors means that everything you buy will go with what you already own.
Here are some of my favorite combinations:
Pink, blue and green (that’s mine)
Coral, navy and yellow
Red, black and white
Gray, turquoise and royal blue
5. Invest in accessories to jazz up your wardrobe.
Even the most basic jeans and a tee shirt can look fabulous when you add cute shoes and a statement necklace.
That sheath dress that you found on clearance? Dress it up with a funky scarf.
Hoping to look trendy? Try a hat or print that will be totally out of style by next year.
Accessories are what people notice about your outfit so either
- Buy only simple and affordable clothing then spend more on quality accessories OR
- Give yourself permission to collect inexpensive accessories and just have fun with it!
You CAN look amazing on a budget!
